Types of Brownies

 Brownies are often everyone's favorite dessert. They are sort of like a thick cookie or a chewy cake. There are many types that consists of a variety of ingredients such as peanuts, chocolate chips, or even mints. Some people prefer theirs plain but others top brownies with sugar, sprinkles, and sometimes frosting. Brownies have come a long way from the classic which consisted of very few ingredients.

There are four basic types of brownies.

Cake-like brownies are flaky and they tend to crumble.

Fudge-like brownies are thick and dense.

Chewy brownies which are obviously chewy and rich.

Blondie's are brownies that look blonde and are usually made without chocolate.

Walnut Brownies

 Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Melt butter and chocolate together in a saucepan.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients.
  3. Pour into a greased 8 inch square pan.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 - 30 minutes.
  5. Cool and cut

Peanut Butter Brownies

Ingredients 

Brownies:
1/3 cup butter
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
2/3 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Topping:
1/3 cup peanut butter
2 tbs butter, softened
2 tbs sugar
1 tbs flour
1 egg

Directions

Brownies:

  1. Melt butter and chocolate together. Set aside to cool.
  2. In a small bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt together.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together until light. Add the vanilla.
  4. Stir in the flour mixture, and the cooled chocolate mixture.
  5. Pour into a greased 8 inch square pan.

Topping:

  1. Beat all ingredients together until smooth.
  2. Drop spoonfuls of peanut butter mixture over the brownie layer.
  3. Run a knife through the cake to marble.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 - 30 minutes.
  5. Cool and cut

Mint Fudge Brownies

 Ingredients

3 large eggs.
1 ½ cups of mint chocolate chips
1 ¼ cups of flour, unbleached
1 cup of chopped nuts
1 cup of sugar
½ cup of butter
3 tablespoons of water
1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract
½ teaspoon of baking soda
½ teaspoon of salt

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; then set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and water; bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Add the mint chocolate chips and vanilla extract, then stir until all of the chips have melted and the mixture is smooth. Transfer to a large bowl.
  5. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each is added.
  6. Gradually blend in flour mixture. Stir in the chopped nuts.
  7. Spread into a greased 13 by 9 inch baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool on a wire rack, then cut into squares

Caramel Brownies

Ingredients

14 oz of caramels
1/3 cup of evaporated milk
8 oz of German sweet chocolate
6 teaspoons of butter
4 medium eggs
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of flour, sifted
1 teaspoon of baking powder
½ teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of vanilla
6 oz of chocolate chips
1 cup of walnuts, chopped

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9 by 13 in baking pan.
  2. Combine the caramels and evaporated milk in top of double boiler over low heat. Cover and simmer until the caramels are melted, stirring occasionally. Set aside, keeping warm.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the German sweet chocolate and butter. Place over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
  4. Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat the eggs until foamy. Gradually add the sugar, beating until the mixture is thick and lemon colored.
  5. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add to egg mixture, mixing thoroughly. Blend in the cooled chocolate mixture and vanilla.
  6. Spread half of mixture into prepared baking pan and bake for 6 minutes. Remove from the oven, then spread the caramel mixture carefully over baked layer. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips.
  7. Stir half a cup of the chopped walnuts into the remaining chocolate batter. Spread the batter by spoonfuls over the caramel layer. Sprinkle with the other half of the walnuts.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool in pan on rack.

Fudge Brownies

Ingredients 

14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk
1 medium egg
1 ¼ cups of all-purpose flour
¾ cup of chopped pecans
½ cup of cold margarine
½ cup of cocoa
¼ cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of brewed coffee
1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla
½ teaspoon of baking powder

Directions:

  1. Preheat your over to 325°F
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sugar and 1 cup of the flour. Cut in the margarine; then press firmly into bottom of eight-inch pan. Bake for 15 minutes or until light brown.
  3. In another large bowl, combine the remaining ¼ cup flour, the condensed milk, cocoa, egg, coffee, vanilla and baking powder. Mix thoroughly and stir in the chopped pecans.
  4. Spread evenly onto the crust and bake for another 20 minutes.
  5. Cool

Blondies

 Ingredients

2 medium eggs
1 ½ cups of brown sugar
1 ½ cups of whole wheat pastry flour
1 cup of chopped pecans
½ cup of melted butter
2 teaspoons of baking powder
½ teaspoon of salt
1 packet of chocolate chips

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together.
  2. Pour into 8-inch square baking pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
