True Facts About Marijuana
74Marijuana, weed, hash, pot and dope are just some of the names for Cannabis. The main psychoactive chemical in it is THC which causes the euphoric feeling weed provides. It passes through your bloodstream to your brain and other organs. Out of all the drugs in the world, marijuana is one of the most used. Forty-two percent of adult Americans have admitted to smoking weed at least once. It is also less harmful than most drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, yet those are legal.
Medicinal
Marijuana has been proven to help sick people with their pain management. It also gives them the appetite to eat and reduces nausea. There has been research that proves it helps muscle spasticity as well. Unfortunately it is only available in certain states so if you aren't ill in the right one you will just have to suffer through.
Gateway? - Not So Much
People seem to think that if you smoke pot you will want something stronger like heroin or crack. That's certainly not true. For most people weed doesn't make you want to get something stronger. Most drugs don't even have the same effect as pot does. Everyone has a mind of their own, high or not, and they can make their own decisions.
Weed shouldn't be considered a gateway to harder drugs. That is why most people thinks it's so horrible. That is like saying a kid that plays with a toy gun is going to grow up a murderer because of it. Doesn't seem very logical when you put it like that, does it?
Not to mention, finding a pot dealer is much more common than finding a meth house.
And pot's illegal because...?
Two Minute Truths
Addictive
Yes, it is possible to become addicted to weed, but it is also possible to be addicted to food or porn. You can be addicted to anything when you don't have self control. It is possible to quit if you really want to. Long-term marijuana abusers have reported feeling irritable, having insomnia, and a decreased appetite when trying to quit. You won't freak out or be found in the fetal position. These symptoms normally subside within a week or two after quiting.
Two Minute Truths
Long Term Effects
It isn't as easy to tell the long term effects as everyone has a different lifestyle. It would be difficult to examine a group of people and be able to tell if health issues came from marijuana and not something else. It has not been proven that weed will cause cancer but smoking pot could increase your chances. That doesn't mean you will definitely get it. Considering standing in the sun too long can give you cancer, I think this isn't a major thing to worry about. In some studies scientists found that the THC found in marijuana could cause you to become sick more often as it impairs the body's immune system which makes it difficult to fight diseases.
Short Term Effects
- Distorted perception
- Trouble concentrating
- Difficulty remembering
- Reduced blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
Some people have other symptoms like anxiety or fear. This can happen when they experience a "bad trip." Weed can reduce stress levels and induce relaxation.
Overdose
No one has ever overdosed from smoking too much pot. It's near impossible. Even if you tried to kill yourself that way you would probably make yourself sick or pass out before you got there. You would have to smoke about two times your body weight of weed to OD. It's not going to happen, accident or not. Although, about 800 joints could kill a person but that would be from carbon monoxide poisoning.
How Long Is It In Your System?
This is a common question for potheads who don't want to loose their jobs for failing a drug test. The tests aren't looking for weed, they look for THC. The THC stores itself in fatty tissues in various organs. Of course heavy smokers will have traces of it in their system longer than the occasional smoker. THC can stay in your system for 3 to 90 days after smoking. A lot of factors determine how long it will be in your system. There isn't a concrete way to find out exactly when the THC will leave.
